IFIMUP
IFIMUP – The Institute of Physics for Advanced Materials, Nanotechnology and Photonics is a physics Research Unit of the University of Porto, operating at Faculty of Sciences aiming to carry out research over a wide range of topics focused on the innovative physical properties of materials at different scales, boosting the development of new technologies in order to contribute to solve today’s Grand Challenges.
IFIMUP brings together previous experience of the Research Unit of Institute of Physics of Materials of the University of Porto (with the same acronym) that dates back to 1987 and was later (2008) integrated in the associated laboratory Institute of Nanotechnologies, combined with new demands boosted by the leadership of the unique Network of Extreme Conditions Laboratories (NECL) and by a strong commitment on the development of up-to-the-market technological applications. This positions IFIMUP strategically as a transversal Institute of Physics in the R&D Portuguese ecosystem with unique opportunities nationwide for cutting-edge advanced research and training in fundamental and applied Physics.
C2TN
C2TN is a research centre of Excellence in the areas of Radiopharmaceutical Sciences, Radiation Protection, Earth Systems, Radioactivity, Cultural Heritage and Advanced Materials. It gathers researchers, teachers, students and other collaborators, with knowledge and competences in leading and cutting edge, multidisciplinary and innovative topics in the aforementioned areas. The C2TN teams operate equipment, laboratories and infrastructures, some of them unique in Portugal. The C2TN members have a longstanding record of collaboration with foreign and national entities and stakeholders in sectors such as academia, research, health, industry, business and entrepreneurship, with professional societies and associations, municipalities, etc., in the framework of fundamental and applied research activities and of provision of advanced technical services.
C2TN's mission encompasses the development of leading edge scientific research and technological development activities in its areas of expertise and the promotion of innovation and of scientific dissemination and outreach
BioISI & CQB
BioISI is hosted by FCUL – Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisboa, the largest of ULisboa 18 schools.
BioISI research is mostly conducted at the FCUL campus. Other participating institutions include: the National Institute of Health (close to FCUL campus) the reference Portugal health institute and thus strategic for BioISI health goals, and Universities of Porto, Minho and Trás-os-Montes (in Northern Portugal), with 1 plant lab each ensuring an inter-regional plant biology network.
Scientific Areas: Multidisciplinary/Interdisciplinary Research; Life and Health Sciences; Biomedicine; Exact Sciences & Engineering; Physics; Natural Science & Environment; Bio-based Product Technology or Food Sciences.
The Centro de Química e Bioquímica was founded in 2001 aiming at creating an environment oriented toward fruitful collaborations between chemistry and biochemistry. The multidisciplinary teams working in the experimental and theoretical labs within CQB involve approximately sixty PhD members and more than one hundred collaborators, most of them PhD and Master students. The lively and youthful atmosphere of the Faculdade de Ciências extends to CQB and is further amplified by the large number of international collaborations and programs (students from ERASMUS, IAESTE and others). We conduct fundamental research disseminated by recognized peer-reviewed scientific journals, and the high number of citations reflects its relevance to the scientific community worldwide.
CQB research is organized in two thematic lines, aligned with the Societal Challenges defined in Horizon 2020 EU, the priorities for the regional development of the Lisbon area, and taking advantage of the consolidated skills of CQB members: Chemistry and Biochemistry for a Clean Environment; Human Health: Molecular Interventions and Regulation Mechanisms.
